The History Department at Mississippi State University invites undergraduate scholars to submit papers for the eighth annual Symposium for History Undergraduate Research (SHUR), which will be held on our Starkville campus on April 29-30, 2016. The theme of the symposium is “Everything Old Is New Again: Creative Approaches to Familiar Subjects in History”

We welcome papers on any historical topic, but especially those that reflect the Mississippi State University History Department’s strengths in the history of science and technology; agricultural, rural, and environmental history; military and diplomatic history; the Civil War; gender history; African American history and civil rights; and the American South.

The paper should be based on the student’s original research in primary sources. Interested students should submit a proposal or abstract of not more than 500 words to Dr. Matthew Lavine at shur@lists.msstate.edu by March 1, 2016. Students whose papers have been accepted will be notified by March 15, 2016.

The History Department will offset the costs of one night’s lodging for presenters. A banquet BBQ dinner will be provided for all attendees on the first night of the conference.
