On 26 April the Uglobe Decolonisation Group @Utrecht University, with the Huizinga Center, and B/A/K will celebrate the English translation of Anton de Kom's book Wij Slaven van Suriname/We Slaves of Suriname. We welcome you to join us! We have a workshop for early career scholars who want to present work related to de Kom. We have a panel on the translation process featuring David McKay and de Kom scholars. The day will culminate in readings from de Kom’s work and from work inspired by it, featuring Thalia Oostendorp and Tessa Leeuwsha.
We warmly welcome graduate students and early career scholars to submit proposals to present research on or related to Anton de Kom and his intellectual and activist network. The first session will focus on de Kom’s social world, examining his social and historical context, possibly focusing on women and family members who facilitated and supported his work. We encourage presenters to examine intersections between gender, race and Empire in de Kom’s world. The second session invites researchers to connect de Kom with global anti-colonial networks and institutions. The connection could be through the themes and style of his work, or more directly through political organizing networks and organisations. We welcome research that places de Kom in broader global intellectual networks. Topics may also include comparative approaches, de Kom’s impact on activism and the memory of de Kom’s work.
We have space for three papers per session (15 minutes presentation slot, with the possibility to pre-circulate a longer piece). We will provide commentators for each session who will present a brief commentary and moderate the discussion.
Please send your proposals to decolonisationgroup@gmail.com by March 31.
We may have a limited amount of travel funding. Please inquire with your proposal.
