The theme of the fourth annual UBTAS symposium in Bosnia-Herzegovina will be urban development in the Balkans during the Ottoman rule. We hope that presenters will unearth both Ottoman-built settlements and shed light on the little-known aspects of urban development along with social, cultural and economic life in the Balkan cities during the Ottoman rule. Historians will largely use one of the major sources of Ottoman urban development, the Land Registry records. Ottoman Land Registry records will help to locate many settlements and architectural structures that have disappeared. Studies relying on primary Ottoman documents, such as Ottoman court records, imperial council records and officer almanacs, will be prioritized.
