Following our conference Rethinking tobacco history: Commodities, empire and agency in global perspective, 1780-1960 (2-4 December 2021), hosted by the University of Cologne and co-sponsored by the British Academy Research Project Commodities of Empire, we are establishing an academic network for the global and imperial history of tobacco. The network has no temporal focus. With the network, we wish to meet the need for a profound exchange of knowledge between geographically focused research landscapes on tobacco. At the same time, we would like to strengthen the place of historical tobacco research among current commodity histories. The network will facilitate regular exchanges about research projects, literature, and upcoming conferences or workshops, and thus deepen collaboration among tobacco historians. We are creating an e-mail distribution list as a first step for considering further ways to expand the network.
