Angela Merkel: The Legacy

International Conference
( Zoom sessions:2 days-Virtual platform:5 days)

Thematic Approach
GIRES, the Global Institute for Research Education & Scholarship wishes to explore the life and legacy of Angela Merkel, one of the most influential and controversial leaders of the 21st century.

Angela Merkel is Germany’s first female chancellor, the first post-unification leader to have been brought up in the East Germany, and a Protestant in a party (CDU) traditionally dominated by Catholics. She has served as Chancellor for almost 16 years as the Chancellor, second to her mentor’s tenure, the architect of German reunification and Maastricht Treaty, Helmut Kohl.

We wish to explore Merkel’s role in the formation of the 21st century politics and economy. How a Angela (born Angela Kasner), a daughter of a Lutheran pastor, raised and educated in East Germany climb the ladder of power and become one of the most powerful and influential politicians in the history of Europe? What was her role in the Eurozone economic crisis and how her political decisions influenced European stability, especially after the Syrian refugee crisis? Did Germany benefit and how this shaped modern Germany’s economy, politics and its position as a G7 member?

We seek to explore the interconnected aspects and decisions that shaped the modern German and European identity and society. Also we wish to re-examine the role of Germany in the global geopolitics under Merkel’s leadership. We hope that the interdisciplinary approaches will reveal the complex yet fascinating career of Angela Merkel and explore how her decisions shaped and/or affected Germany, Europe and the world.
