“Stories of Resilience”

Illinois and the world continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic and all that it has wrought. Yet, amid tragedy and uncertainty, stories of human resilience continue to light the path forward through the darkness. Illinois history is full of stories of resilience in the face of forced removal, racially motivated violence, legislative opposition to women’s rights, and so much more.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum Conference on Illinois History is accepting proposals that deal broadly with stories of resilience in Illinois’s history, culture, politics, geography, or archaeology. We encourage submissions from professional and avocational historians, students, and those engaged in the study of Illinois history at libraries, historic sites, museums, educational institutions, and historical societies. We particularly welcome proposals which illuminate the diversity of Illinois history in regard to race, ethnicity, ability, and/or gender.

We encourage full panel proposals, but individual paper proposals are acceptable.

We welcome traditional panels as well as non-traditional panels such as round table discussions, lightning round sessions, and workshops.

For the first time we will also provide space for poster presentations. This option is open to graduate and undergraduate students as well as seniors in high school.

To submit a panel or paper proposal, please send:

  • A one-page summary of the topic.
  • A one-page resume/CV for each participant.

To submit a poster proposal, please send:

  • A one-page summary of the topic.

Proposals are also being accepted for educator workshops focusing on the use of best pedagogical practices and/or innovative strategies to teach any aspect of Illinois’s history, culture, politics, geography, or archaeology. We particularly welcome proposals which encourage the teaching of diverse Illinois history in regard to race, ethnicity, ability, and/or gender.

To submit an educator workshop proposal, please fill out this form.

The deadline for proposals is April 1, 2022.
