The Urban Ecologies & GEO Workshop Series: Workshop One, Methodological Expositions

Call for Abstracts

Hosted online by the Urban Ecologies Research Group at the University of Cambridge, 28th March 2022

The city has long been a playground for innovative geographical methods. Research with urban animals poses new questions and opportunities for geographical methods and methodologies. A team led by Catherine Oliver (University of Cambridge) are editing an Open Collection with GEO on these questions and are now welcoming submissions to both the Open Collection and to a series of workshops over the next two years. An introduction to the Open Collection can be found here: https://doi.org/10.1002/geo2.101

The Urban Ecologies Open Collection will showcase innovative and creative geographical research with animals across three themes: methods, ethics, and design.

Applications for the first workshop are now being accepted. In this workshop, on “methods,” we will bring together people who are developing these methodologies in cities across the world. The workshop will be structured around masterclasses developing ideas for publication in GEO. We encourage anyone interested in participating to read the introduction ahead of submitting.

The first workshop focuses on methodological practice. Participants will work towards publications for the Urban Ecologies GEO Open Collection. The first workshop will take place online in March 2022, with a keynote panel of: Dr Sandra Jasper (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlín), Dr Sneha Annavarapu (Yale NUS College), Dr Hugo Reinert (University of Oslo) and Dr Paula Arcari (Edge Hill University).

We invite submissions from scholars who are working on urban geographies beyond the human. We are particularly encouraging contributions that incorporate innovative formats, such as photo essays, soundscapes, films, interviews, or maps, as well as submissions from postgraduate students and early career researchers.

Accepted participants will be required to submit a short excerpt of their contribution, whether that is an excerpt of writing, part of a film, or a selection of photographs, for example, ahead of the workshop. These will be circulated and commented on by a small group of other participants and experts for the masterclasses. All participants will be expected to comment on a small selection of (up to four) other contributions.

To apply for this workshop, please send a 200-word abstract detailing the methods, location, and the form your contribution will take, as well as a 100-word bio to Catherine Oliver at co419@cam.ac.uk. Questions can also be directed to Catherine.

The extended deadline for expressions of interest is 11th February 2022
Applicants will be notified of our decision by 18th February 2022
Draft contributions will be due by 11th March 2022
