Call for Papers
Reconstructing Nations, Reinventing People, and Reforming Societies
We are pleased to welcome submissions for FSU HGSA’s eighth annual Southeast Regional Graduate Student Conference to be held on March 19, 2016, at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.
The History Graduate Student Association of Florida State University invites graduate students in the humanities and social sciences to join us in an exploration of new research pertaining to culture, politics, and memory. The theme for the conference is “Reconstructing Nations, Reinventing People, and Reforming Societies.” The conference is a congenial environment put on in the spirit of scholarly collaboration. Participants are encouraged to meet and converse with fellow up-and-coming scholars, to share ideas and feedback, and to build interpersonal networks essential to careers in academia.
We welcome individual submissions or full panels that investigate change, transformation, reinvention, and reimagination. The conference will examine aftermaths and new beginnings, and investigate how individuals, societies, ideas, and boundaries evolve throughout time. We aim to expand our understanding of this theme with an interdisciplinary approach including but not limited to the fields of Anthropology, Education, Gender and Sexuality, History, Literature, Modern Languages and Linguistics, Psychology, Religion, and the Visual Arts.
Some of the questions we hope to address include, but are not limited to: How do nations and individuals change or attempt to change? How does change occur? How do societies, classes, and individuals reinvent? What role do class and gender play in causing, facilitating, or hindering change? What happens in the aftermath of seminal or shocking events? How do societies respond to adverse circumstances? How is historical periodization characterized by change?
To apply for the Conference, email the application form, along with a titled abstract of no more than 300 words, and return it to firstname.lastname@example.org. For a copy of the application form or any qeustions, please email this same address.
Presentations are to last no more than 15 minutes. The deadline for submission is January 8, 2016. All proposals will be acknowledged, with notification of acceptance in January 2016.
