Pedagogy Roundtable: “Irish Studies Across the English Curriculum”
Guaranteed ACIS Panel at the MLA Annual Convention
January 5-8, 2023
San Francisco, CA

As an inherently interdisciplinary field that sits at the crossroads of literature, language, history, music, and politics, Irish studies has relevance across the humanities curriculum. Yet Irish literature is often taught as part of British literature survey classes or, in some instances, more narrowly as elective Irish literature classes. Given the waning number of English majors and the proliferation of writing and composition courses, along with the decline of specialized Irish studies programs, it is a crucial time to consider the ways that Irish literary study can be reimagined to appeal to a wide array of students and scholars. This panel seeks to explore the question of how to integrate Irish material into the humanities curriculum in ways that productively engage with other literatures and cultures while also enhancing theoretical frameworks and approaches such as medical humanities, digital humanities, disability studies, and mad studies, among others. What kinds of new and productive connections can be made by putting Irish literature in dialogue with composition studies, and other interdisciplinary fields such as Black studies, Latinx studies, queer and gender studies? What are some new and innovative ways of teaching Irish literature?

We invite proposals of 150 words on any topic pertaining to teaching Irish studies across the English curriculum for this roundtable discussion at MLA 2023. Submit proposals by January 15, 2022 to ACIS Literature Representative Dr. Bridget English, benglish@uic.edu
