Sport Psychology and the Psychology of Athletes

International Conference
( Zoom sessions:2 days-Virtual platform:5 days)

Thematic Approach

The international conference organized by GIRES, the Global Institute for Research, Education & Scholarship, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands focuses on the exploration of Sports Psychology and the Psychology of Athletes.

Sport industry has a deep impact on economy, society, culture and politics. Ancients Greeks used to say that a healthy mind resided in a healthy body, and throughout history, nations have praised athletes for their achievements because they embodied physical perfection and glory.

The value of athleticism and the ideal of the perfect athlete have played a significant role in contemporary history as well. Athletes have become representatives of their nations, as a nation’s hopes were laid upon their shoulders. Particularly the last decades, sport has become one of the most powerful industries internationally.

Recently, Michael Phelps, probably the greatest swimmer in history, Aly Raisman, captain of the American Olympic gymnastics team, Andrew Luck, a famous NFL player, Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey, professional wrestler, DeMar DeRozan and Kevin Love, NBA players and Olympians (Love), Abby Wambach, a member of US women national soccer team and Simone Biles, one of a greatest gymnasts in history are only some of the numerous examples of athletes who revealed their struggle with depression & anxiety. For long, the industry did not pay attention to their mental wellbeing and its has been kept a secret for decades.

Despite the glory, there is a dark side long left in shadows: how the pressure for perfection and success affects the mental health of the athletes? How did their teams and associations handled (or not) their difficulties? What are the problems that athletes face during the career and how their lives are affected after their retirement?  We wish to focus on the difficulties that athletes face during the long and painful processes to reach the medals; astonishing performances may have a deep impact in their mental health and it is time to reveal and offer an interdisciplinary approach to such a significant issue.

We wish to explore the impact of sports on economy and politics and education; and delve into the psychology, identity and behavior of people as these relate to sports. How has athletics shaped our culture and what is the role of idealism? Is it a well-prepared product that forced athletes to succeed without respecting and protecting them? How sports are affected by the Covid – 19 Crisis? We hope that we will also exchange ideas on the ways physical education is part of the school curriculum and understand its impact in the future education/well-being of the students/citizens.
