Theme: Chinese Borderlands in Transition: History, Space, and Culture



The Eighth Young Scholars' Forum in Chinese Studies is now open for abstract submissions to gather young scholars across the globe to explore the transitions in ports, borders, frontiers, and other borderlands in pan-Chinese and overseas Chinese regions across history with particular but not limited interests in the following topics:

  • Emergence of borderland communities and lifestyles;
  • Border-crossing and subsequent cultural activities;
  • Changes in religions and religious practices;
  • Changes in natural and artificial landscapes;
  • Memories and imageries of geographical and cultural boundaries;
  • Impacts on other geographical regions, cultural spaces, and intellectual domains


Applicants must be:

  • Ph.D. candidates (i.e. after completion of qualifying examination); or
  • Ph.D. graduates with less than five years of work experience



Applications should include:

  • an abstract of no more than 400 words
  • a short biography of no more than 200 words
