Subjectivity and the Political 2016

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

9-10 March, 2016

Madrid, Spain.

Deadline for Abstracts: 30th November 2015.

The purpose of this two-day international conference is to explore the relationship between subjectivity and the political. Much has been made of the so-called return to the political in contemporary political philosophy, but this return has also been accompanied by renewed philosophical interest in the question of subjectivity. Guided by the idea that conceptions of the political are always intimately connected to and dependent on a certain conception of subjectivity, and, inversely, that subjectivity is itself a product of a certain articulation of the political, the conference organizers aim to gather an international selection of scholars to explore these themes and this relation.

Contributions may explore:

  • Historical conceptions of the political, including the theories of subjectivity that underpin them.
  • The political implications of historical conceptions of subjectivity.
  • What do subjectivity and the political refer to? And what is the relationship between them?
  • What are the ethical implications of the subjectivity-political relationship?
  • What do contemporary debates in posthumanism, feminism, and environmentalism mean for discussions of subjectivity and the political?

Papers that explore the relationship between subjectivity and the political from alternative perspectives and directions are also welcome.

Anyone wishing to present a paper should submit an abstract, with name and institutional affiliation included, of 300 words to subpol2016@uc3m.es by 30th November 2015. Papers should be suitable for a 20 minute presentation. Those accepted will be notified by the 20th December 2015. The working language of the conference is English and it is hoped that a selection of papers will be published in an edited collection. More information can be found at the conference website: https://subjectivityandthepolitical2016.wordpress.com

The conference is part of the activities of the Conex Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Project ‘Sovereignty and Law: Between Ethics and Politics’ funded by the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement 600371, El Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad del Gobierno de Espana (COFUND2013-40258) and Banco Santander. Support has also been provided by the Department of Theoretical Philosophy, Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
