English version

CfP: Doll narratives internationally – literary dolls/puppets in past and present

The fifth CfP of the journal denkste: puppe / just a bit of: doll (de:do), a multidisciplinary online (and print) journal for human-doll discourses, has the thematic focus Doll narratives internationally – literary dolls/puppets in past and present. All previous four issues with their different foci can be accessed at the homepage: https://denkste-puppe.info. Regardless of the main topic, free scientific contributions, miscellaneous and other presentation and text formats on human-doll/puppet aspects can be submitted at any time. All scientific contributions are subject to peer reviews.

Focussing on doll narratives internationally – literary dolls/puppets in past and present we are addressing a literary topic that has so far been little studied in its breadth. It takes up the idea of an anthology of original German-language literature that we edited some time ago (Fooken u. Mikota 2016), in which we compiled and annotated doll-related texts for children, adolescents and adults under the title "Should we play being human?" ranging from the time of the Enlightenment period to the present. The current CfP expands this framework and looks at the literary-historical development of doll literature in international contexts and linguistic areas – from its earliest beginnings to the present day, regardless of the age of the target groups. Similar to fairy tales, a multicultural and thus ‘international view’ can shed more light on possible particularities of literary doll narratives both in terms of general-universal themes as well as in terms of specific manifestations of the doll narratives in the respective literary language areas.

In German-speaking areas, the first doll stories in girls' literature were influenced by translations from French. In adult literature, on the other hand, certain doll motifs (e.g., dolls as artificial humans or gender-typical constellations) have repeatedly played a central role in a wide variety of language areas, literatures and cultures since the very beginning of literature. Some of these narratives and motifs have been translated and have met with great resonance in international discursive contexts, while others have remained largely confined to their own linguistic space. We are interested in all kinds, that is in the reception of doll/puppet texts translated into German as well as in typical doll-related literary lines of tradition beyond German. Are there language- and culture-specific doll motifs and narratives, for example, in Scandinavia, in English-language literature with its diverse varieties, or in the Romance-influenced language areas of Europe and America? What roles do doll/puppet narratives play in Slavic languages? Is there a special literature in the "doll country” Japan"´ or in other Asian countries? What about the literary narrative traditions in Africa as to dolls and puppets and generally about doll/puppet narratives in the languages and literatures of the world?

The call is directed at different disciplinary fields of theory, research, and practical domains, with the primary aim of illuminating the idea of doll/puppet tales and stories in the multitude of its literary, artistic-cultural, medial, psychological-pedagogical variants and manifestations.

The (scientific) contributions should not exceed 30.000 characters. Other types of texts should generally be shorter (5.000 – 15.000 characters). The range of topics addressed results from the above-mentioned considerations. In any case, attention should be paid to interdisciplinary comprehensibility. The texts can be submitted in German or Englishas electronic file to the editorial team (Prof. Dr. Insa Fooken, fooken@psychologie.uni-siegen.de and/or Dr. Jana Mikota, mikota@germanistik.uni-siegen.de). Stylesheets and manuscript guidelines are available on the homepage. Please send a brief sketch (approx. 3.500 characters) and a short CV by November 14, 2021. Feedback as to the invitation to submit a contribution will be made by mid-December 2021. The final manuscript must be submitted by March 13, 2022 at the latest. The planned publication date is end of September 2022.
