The Tennessee Historical Society, Nashville, Tennessee, is accepting applications for the 2016 Wills Research Fellowship. The purpose of the fellowship is to promote the interpretation of Tennessee history and the scholarly use of the THS collections, housed at the Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville. (See http://sos.tn.gov/tsla for a catalog and manuscript guide.) The fellowship is provided through the Society's Jesse E. Wills Memorial Fund. The collections of the THS are especially strong in the early American republic, Jacksonian, antebellum, and Civil War eras.

The award of the fellowship will be made on the basis of the applicant's scholarly qualifications, the merits of the proposal, and the topic's demonstrated use of the THS collections. Research that will result in an article for publication in the peer-reviewed Tennessee Historical Quarterly, published by the THS, will receive highest consideration.

A single $500 stipend for a one-week fellowship period will be awarded. University faculty, doctoral candidates, and published public and lay historians are eligible.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, description of the research project not longer than two double-spaced pages, and a resume of no more than 5 pages. The project description must demonstrate the relevance of the project in using the THS collections and preferably will include the identification of specific materials to be used. Two letters of recommendation are also required. We prefer that the application packet be sent as a PDF to atop@tennesseehistory.org; letters of recommendation may be emailed separately or sent by USPS. The USPS address is Fellowship Committee, Tennessee Historical Society, 305 Sixth Ave N, Nashville TN 37243.

The application deadline for the 2016 fellowship is December 15, 2015. The award will be announced in late February 2016. For additional information contact executive director Ann Toplovich at atop@tennesseehistory.org.

Founded in 1849, the Tennessee Historical Society is a private, not for profit institution, dedicated to the preservation of the history of all Tennesseans. The assemblage of its collections dates to 1818.
