“MEDIA AND DEMOCRACY”

As one of the most significant institutions of modern democracy, media is evaluated from the framework of a wide array of themes and concepts including the rights of freedom of thought, expression and information; political participation; the formation of public opinion; political legitimacy and the crisis of democracy. Thus, as an essential element of modern sociopolitical organization, media has been positioned as the fourth power following legislation, execution and jurisdiction.

Considering the Turkey’s modernization experience from the Ottoman period onwards and the recent transition to the presidential system of governance, “Media and Democracy” is determined to be the theme of the special issue of Marmara Journal of Communication, with a special emphasis on the role of media in Turkey’s sociopolitical structure, relations between media and the state’s different power realms, based on contemporary, historical and normative dimensions.

We invite you to contribute to our special issue by sending articles and reviews under the following headings:
