Background: The Department of Japanese Law in Hagen was established in 1989 as a research and teaching unit within the Faculty of Law in order to provide students access to the Japanese legal system in German. At the time, this was one of - if not the - first university programme to award a dedicated university degree in Japanese law outside of Japan. Jun.-Prof. Weitzdörfer has recently succeeded the Department’s founder, Prof. Hans-Peter Marutschke.
