Social Sciences Assistant Professorships
The University of Tübingen invites applications for two Assistant Professors in the social sciences with a focus on ‘Global Encounters’ to commence on or after April 1, 2022. The contract is initially for four years, is extended by another two years following a positive interim evaluation. After these six years, there is a final evaluation, and based on its recommendation, the University can offer a permanent position.
These posts are two of four assistant professorships currently being hired in connection with the University’s ‘Global Encounters’ platform. Established as part of its Excellence Strategy, this platform examines the construction, reconstruction and restructuring of global networks. It focuses on the processes and practices of interdependency and communication, as well as the consequences such global encounters have for the formation of knowledge and communities, which are studied with regard to their decoloniality and their future sustainability. The Global Encounters platform brings together and supports researchers from different fields, to help them channel the growing dynamic at the University of Tübingen toward attracting major external funding for anything from collaborative centers to Clusters of Excellence.
To this end, the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences invites applications for two positions of assistant professor - for details and specific criteria for the interim and final evaluations, along with the general quality assurance plan and promotion policy, please see links below:
- Assistant Professor in Sociology, with a focus on Global Sociology: Urban Futures in the Global South
- Assistant Professor in Political Science, with a focus on Political Struggles in the Global South
The successful applicants will undertake research and teaching (initial teaching load of two courses per semester, i.e. four hours per week, prior to the interim evaluation, and three courses/six hours thereafter) in the above fields and contribute appropriate time to academic administration. They will be qualified in the relevant discipline and show interdisciplinary experience, along with the potential to develop the field both independently and by working on broader perspectives in cooperation with the other departmental and platform professors. Duties also include participation in developing the subject area of and preparing proposals for the Global Encounters platform.
Each of the posts requires an outstanding doctorate in the pertinent field, focused on a theme relating to global encounters, as well as teaching experience. Competence in interdisciplinary research and transdisciplinary communication skills are especially advantageous.
In the course of the contract, the assistant professors are expected to attain the research and teaching achievements that will qualify them for an appointment as a tenured professor at any German university (known as the habilitation). Those who have already completed a habilitation will be excluded from consideration for these positions.
The University seeks to increase the number of international professors and therefore welcomes applications from researchers outside Germany (here in particular from the Global South). The University is also interested in increasing the number of women in research and teaching and therefore also strongly encourages women to apply. Applications from equally qualified candidates with disabilities will be given preference.
Applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae and description of academic career, copies of diplomas and certificates, a list of publications, details of teaching experience, a conceptual sketch for the applicant’s interdisciplinary research plan for the coming years, two research articles (published or unpublished), and a completed application form. These should be sent, preferably as a single PDF attachment, to: firstname.lastname@example.org, by September 15, 2021.
