You are invited to register for an international interdisciplinary conference titled ‘The State We’re In: Democracy’s Fractures, Fixes and Futures’ at Nelson Mandela University, South Africa, on 7 - 10 September 2021. This online conference will critically interrogate the state of democracy - tendencies, dynamics, and structural conditions, in South Africa, Africa and elsewhere.

The conference features:

Conference themes include constitutionalism, nationalism and neoliberalism; democratic institutions, laws and accountability; party politics and political representation; the developmental state; decolonisation of democracy; indigeneity and traditionalism; African feminism; queer activism; land and rural struggles; Black identities; education and social justice.


The conference is co-hosted by the Centre for the Advancement of Non-Racialism and Democracy (CANRAD), the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Engagement and Transformation, and the Faculty of Humanities, Nelson Mandela University.


Registration for the conference is free for both presenters and attendees, and all attendees are expected to be registered.


Academics, students and activists are welcome to attend.
