Scientific theme for 2022: Global Economies

Following the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world stands at a crossroads: weighing a return to limitless growth experienced in recent decades against starting over with new, more inclusive and complex thinking around our global economies. This dilemma can be approached through a triptych of a paradigm-defining critical context: a post-COVID world, an emerging situation, a climate crisis, an ongoing one, and an increasingly digital, largely unregulated commercial landscape, a potential challenge of global proportions.
Such a dynamic phenomenon as the economy has many crucial impacts on countless fields of activity, including social, geopolitical, environmental, and public health. The critical dimension of global economies, now and for decades to come, will be one of balance. Is it possible to reverse our dependence on runaway growth and redesign our economies using regenerative economics? How can our governments and institutions deal with digital issues such as tax accountability, regulatory transparency, and data confidentiality? As the world’s center of gravity is shifting from the West towards China and other nations led by authoritarian regimes, how will the state-centric model influence established western systems and those in emerging markets? How can we define the opportunities of an economics of wellbeing? To meet these challenges, it will be essential to examine economies using innovative tools, and original research customized to a new and emerging era.
