CALL FOR PROPOSALS

XXth Symposium of the American Council for Southern Asian Art (ACSAA)
April 7-10, 2022

We are pleased to announce that the Twentieth Biennial Symposium of the American Council for Southern Asian Art (ACSAA) will be co-hosted by the Georgia Museum of Art/Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia, Athens (April 7-8, 2022) with generous support from the UGA Center for Asian Studies, and the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University, Atlanta (April 9-10, 2022).

ACSAA symposia occur in alternating years and serve as opportunities to meet colleagues, reconnect with mentors and graduate school cohorts, and share one's current research with the field. From senior scholars to graduate students, ACSAA symposia are one of the primary ways ACSAA members gather and support one another, develop ideas in a collegial environment, and participate in the ACSAA community.

In the first round, we invite proposals for panels that are either fully pre-formed or open that reflect original and/or new research in the history of South, Southeast Asian and Himalayan Art. All members are welcome to propose ideas for new panels, even if he or she presented a paper at ACSAA XIX. Individual paper submissions will be due in the second round in November 2021. All presenters and panel chairs must be ACSAA members in good standing.

The Selection Committee would like to especially encourage submissions of panels that focus on the history of Southeast Asian Art, as well as panels that engage the Visual Cultures of Jainism in South Asia. In addition, we also encourage panel submissions that attend to – or draw inspiration from – the scholarly legacy of Walter Spink, former President and perennial advocate of ACSAA, who passed away in 2019.

Panel proposals should be in the format of a 250-word abstract clearly articulating the panel title and topic. Pre-formed panel proposals should include a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of (5) speakers with a 250-word abstract for each paper, along with a one-page CV for the panel chair and each presenter. Each panel will have an allotted time of ninety (90) minutes.
