Research, Teaching and Service in an Uncertain Age

July 26, 2021 – August 6, 2021

Ife Institute of Advanced Studies invites applications from doctoral and postdoctoral scholars from any part of the world for the 2021 Ife Summer Institute. This annual summer programme, already in its fifth year, normally holds on the beautiful and serene campus of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Its goal is to facilitate and foster innovative research among young scholars in the academy, particularly those in the humanities and social sciences, by exposing them to relevant theory, discourse, method, and pedagogies. The programme is an international platform anchored by a team of senior scholars drawn from Africa, North America, Asia and Europe. It engages a wide range of themes and issues designed to stimulate and deepen the understanding of research, teaching and service missions in the academy.

Given the prevailing global circumstances and unusual experience in the past year since the pandemic began, our expectations for this year's summer institute are high in generating new ideas and shared experiences. Also anticipated are unique opportunities for learning, teaching and research, which will enable social progress and inspire a rejuvenation of the pandemic-hit academic space.

The fifth edition of the summer institute, taking place from July 26 – August 6, 2021, will focus on issues surrounding the contemporary period's challenges and doing research, creative epistemology and new forms of teaching in the face of the new normal. More specifically, it will dwell on existing and new avenues for teaching, learning, and research in Africa's humanities and social sciences, given its limited resources.
