Conference: 20th Century Mass Graves - Witnesses of Violence, Sources of History
Tbilisi, Georgia, 15-17 October 2015
Deadline: 17 August 2015
Conference organized by DVV International in cooperation with Ruhr-University Bochum and supported by VolkswagenStiftung.
The aim of the conference is to share experience between experts and researchers working with mass graves in different parts of the world.
The conference will include three major sections: 1) Locating and examining mass graves, 2) Historical context of mass graves , 3) Mass graves as societal issues.
The first section will be dedicated to historical, archaeological and forensic methods used to locate and examine mass graves (such as the use of archive material, oral history, maps, aerial photography, ground radar, etc.). The second section will focus on the historical context of mass graves. Mass graves result from historical events and developments while at the same time providing data for further historical research. A third section is dedicated to the question of how to deal with mass graves on a societal level. Mass graves witness traumatic experiences and violent periods of history. Approaching and processing these experiences forms a challenging task. Consequently, this section will focus on the role of mass graves in history teaching, transitional justice, memorialisation and the arts.
If you are an expert/researcher interested in participating in the conference, please send a short abstract of your presentation (not exceeding one page) and a brief bio/CV with contact details to: firstname.lastname@example.org
Accomodation and meals during the conference will be covered. Limited funds for the reimbursement of travel costs (partial or full) are available. A conference volume will be published.
Deadline for submitting abstracts is 17 August 2015.
Applicants will be notified by end of August 2015.
