Free Webinar for Lovers of Leonard Cohen (March 17)
Borderlines Open School for Advanced Cross-Cultural Studies, an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural teaching and research organization, presents a new course on Music / Jewish studies:
Manual for Living with Defeat on Boogie Street: A Lexicon for Lovers of Leonard Cohen
Instructor: Aubrey Glazer – a lover of Cohen and director of Panui: an open space for researching Jewish mysticism.
Join us on March 17 at 4.30 pm EST for a FREE introductory lecture on Cohen’s lyrics and their philosophical overtones.
This lecture will explore why Leonard Cohen’s post-secular songbook—from the songs “Hallelujah” (1984) to “You Want It Darker” (2016)—has touched so many, and such a diversity of, listeners. Taking a uniquely interdisciplinary approach to Cohen’s lyrics, in our meeting we will ask questions such as: How do this “mystic’s” songs illuminate questions of meaning-making in a post-secular context? What roles do Kabbalah, Hasidism, and Rinzai Buddhism play in his lyrics?
The lecture will be held online on Zoom, free to all but registration is mandatory: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_HXQHgUG6RUK2IFi5BJPJXg
The lecture will be followed by a four-session course with Aubrey, on enrollment basis. These meetings will be held on Wednesdays, April 7, 14, 21, 28 (4:30-6:00 pm EST).
