To honor the bicentennial of Fyodor Dostoevsky's birth, the Carmel Institute invites you to a book talk with Dr. John Givens, Professor of Russian, University of Rochester: The Image of Christ in Dostoevsky's Russia Friday, 19 March 2021 4-5 pm EST (GMT-5)Moderated by Dr. Anton Fedyashin, Director, Carmel Institute The talk will contextualize the image of Christ in the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky in the broader nineteenth-century Russian literary tradition and European intellectual trends of positivism and materialism challenging spiritual and conservative social, political, and moral values. John Givens is professor of Russian and chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Rochester. He is the author of The Image of Christ in Russian Literature: Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Bulgakov, Pasternak; Prodigal Son: Vasilii Shukshin in Soviet Russian Culture; co-translator of Vasily Shukshin's Stories from a Siberian Village; and former editor of Russian Studies in Literature.
