Asia is home to a great geographic diversity of landforms and landscapes which has influenced the many different lifestyles and cultural strategies found within this world region. From forest dwellers to desert pastoralists, pluralist kingdoms as well as communities of singular aesthetics, on islands, mainlands, and peninsulas, the great range of cultural expression is astounding. This panel will explore one thread that interconnects all communities regardless of size or complexity: the use of containers as both functional tools and as mediums of culture aesthetics and/or worldview. We welcome papers that delve into the interrelationships between containers, especially clay pots, and any aspect of cultural heritage in Asia. It is hoped that multiple perspectives and varied contexts of containers will lead to a lively discussion of the role of this ordinary good within the many cultural heritages of Asia.
The conference will take place from the 5th through the 8th of July, 2018 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, India. The conference website is at: http://www.aas-in-asia2018.com.
