Suffrage Now: International Conference on Suffrage and Democracy

Date: August 13-14, 2021 at Stockholm University, Sweden. This conference will be in a hybrid format, with both in-person and virtual participation, and the proceedings will be livestreamed. All sessions will be in English.

This conference commemorates the centennial of the introduction of universal and equal suffrage in Sweden. It aims to share research on the gradual introduction of women’s suffrage around the world and its consequences in a comparative and global perspective. Our goal is to bring together scholars from a variety of disciplines and countries in order to engage in a critical dialogue on gender and democracy in both past and present.

Keynote speakers: Birgitta Bader-Zaar, Univ. of Vienna, Austria, History; Corrine McConnaughy, Princeton Univ., USA, Political Science; Veronica Giordano, Univ. Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sociology; Sumita Mukherjee, Bristol Univ., UK, History.

1. The actors: Visions, strategies, and transnational interactions of the suffrage movements; alliances and conflicts.

2. The institutions: The historical contexts of suffrage, nationalism, war, and new institutions; limitations on universal suffrage; historical and contemporary challenges to democracy from a gender perspective.

3. Culture, discourse, and morality: Manifestations of the struggle, including emotions, songs, and posters, bodies and dress codes; narratives and contested jubilees.
