We are seeking four individual chapter contributions by historians or area specialists on the national histories of Indonesia, Ghana, Egypt, and Finland toward their respective accessions to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), for a comparative study on the nuclear diplomacies of neutral and nonaligned states.

The project, entitled “The Neutrals and the Bomb: N+N States and the Creation of the Nonproliferation Treaty” will compare the approaches of five neutrals (Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, and Finland) and five nonaligned countries (Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, and Yugoslavia) toward the NPT negotiations and their respective approaches on the nuclear security question. To this end, we are seeking chapter contributions on Indonesia, Ghana, Egypt, and Finland, to complete the study.

The volume asks what the nuclear security priorities of these states were when the NPT was first proposed in 1958, how the governments and foreign ministries reacted to the proposal, and how the national priorities changed (or remained the same), until the treaty opened for signatures, in 1968? Contributions should focus on the national, regional, and international priorities of the four countries and illuminate the individual priorities of politicians, diplomats, and other relevant stakeholders in the process. Since the diplomacy toward the NPT is inseparably connected to questions of national security, sovereignty, and energy, we welcome particularly studies that comprehensively discuss the national histories.

Contributions should be written in English, be between 6,000 and 8,0000 words in length, and will optimally include primary sources (although this is not a condition). The volume will be published by a reputable press within 2021/early 2022.
