for a workshop aiming to a special issue on

Mobile spatialities and temporalities of the Mediterranean (XV-XXI centuries)

Deadline: 5 February 2021

The 1990s mobility turn in the social sciences and the 2015-2016 migration crisis have increasingly brought to the fore the issues of displacement, travel, and immigration, which are part of society. Mobility patterns have affected geopolitical dynamics and shaped social, geographical, environmental settings, as well as processes in developing knowledge in significant and multifarious ways.

This CfP seeks submission that analyse the emergence, definition and reframing of a Mediterranean area via large-scale movements of humans and ecological elements, circulation of ideas, religious knowledge systems and scientific expertise, the travel of material objects in everyday life. Contributions should cover the Early Modern and Modern times (XV-XXI centuries) and approach the theme from the perspectives of the Environmental Humanities, Environmental History, Mediterranean and African Studies, Intellectual History, and the History of Science and Technology.

We invite submissions from Early Career Scholars (PhD candidates and non-tenured researchers) that address the following issues:

- The relationship between a specific mobility pattern to a certain idea of the Mediterranean space;

- Networks that have defined and entailed specific geographical borders for the Mediterranean area;

- Immobilities and dynamics of exclusion related to diasporas, migrations and transfers across the Mediterranean.

How to apply:

We require a working title, a brief description of the author(s), an abstract of the article, and 5 keywords.

Abstracts should be around 400-600 words and explain how the research relates to the call.

Accommodation and travel expenses can be covered by the EUI according to the reimbursement policies in place. If applicants have no access to project funds or institutional financial support, this should be specified in the application.

Proposals should be sent directly to:;

The deadline to submit a proposal is 5 February 2021. Accepted proposals will be notified by 15 February 2021.

Successful applicants will be invited to take part in a work-in-progress session where they can present and discuss their research. The session is part of the workshop “Mobilities in Early Modern and Contemporary Mediterranean” to be held at the EUI on 27-28 May 2021 in a hybrid format.

Draft versions of the selected contributions (approximately 6000 words) are expected to be circulated in early May.
