Dear H-Net users, we would like to invite you to the inaugural session of the Permanent Forum Visões da Ásia, a monthly event organized by the Research Network Visões da Ásia. Created in 2020, the network aims at consolidating the area of Asian Studies in Brazil.

On December 18, 2020, between 10 am and noon (Brasília time), we will hold a debate on the two film adaptations of Endo Shusaku's novel Silence (1966) and the historical context of the persecution against Christians in seventeenth-century Japan.

For this session, we invited:

- Liam Matthew Brockey, Professor of Early Modern and Religious History at Michigan State University. Author of Journey to the East (Harvard University Press, 2007) and The Visitor (Harvard University Press, 2014), he was one of the historical consultants of Martin Scosese's Silence (2016).

- Martin Nogueira Ramos, Chief of the Kyoto Centre of the École française d'Extreme-Orient. His 2019 La foi des ancêtres (Edições CNRS) completely revamped the history of the so-called kakure kirishitan between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries by focusing on numerous new Japanese and Western sources.

- Yuri Hichmeh, PhD by the Universidade Federal do Paraná. In 2018, he defended the doctoral dissertation "O Domínio pelos Livros: a formação da identidade japonesa como parte do processo de centralização política na era Tokugawa”, a pioneering project in Brazilian academy that used Portuguese and Japanese documents to explore issues of identity and religiosity in seventeenth-century Japan.

The session will be held in Portuguese.
