The Journal of Military, Veteran and Family Health (JMVFH) is seeking high-quality, timely articles that explore the health and well-being of military members, Veterans, and their families through the lens of sex, gender, sex/gender, or intersectionality for publication in a September 2021 special edition. A Statement of Intent from interested authors is due on December 19, 2020. 

The purpose of the special edition is to highlight emerging research, trends, and future directions in the mainstreaming of sex and gender throughout military, Veteran and family health research. Articles included in the supplement will advance analysis in this research field and examine implications for policy and practice in these communities.

Articles including (but not limited to) the following themes/sub-themes will be considered:

  • Challenges and opportunities related to clinical practice and program delivery
  • Social and policy measures
  • Mental health and well-being
  • Physical health and well-being
  • Whole of health integration of mind/body/spirit
  • Cultural and socio-cultural considerations
  • Experiences of equity seeking military and Veteran groups (e.g., women, LGBTQ2+, Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, persons with disabilities)
  • Challenges and opportunities related to a range of family structures
  • Occupational and operational concerns
  • Transition to civilian life post-service
  • Military sexual trauma
  • Equity, diversity and inclusion in organizations
  • Housing and homelessness


Dec. 19, 2020 — Statement of intent due (maximum 500 words)

Feb. 15, 2021 — Manuscript submission due 

March to May 2021 — Decision and revisions

June 1, 2021 — Final manuscripts due

September 2021 — Publication released
