Security is a central and unexplored issue when it comes to the French Wars of Religion in the 16th century. For the first time systematically and focused on contemporary patterns of interpretation, this study analyses imaginations of security and their function in these confessional struggles. A broad debate on security comes to light, dealing with questions of an endangered state, endangered salvation, and the threat of God’s wrath for individuals and collectives. On the one side, this provides new perspectives on crucial events and processes of the French Wars of Religion. On the other side, it also contributes to Historical Security Studies by elaborating the analytical concept of “Historical Security Communication” which enables deeper insights into the complexities and ambivalences of imaginations and functions of security in the Early Modern period.
