For the forthcoming Society for the Study of American Women Writers (SSAWW) conference (currently scheduled to be held from November 4-7, 2021 in Baltimore, depending on the state of the pandemic), we are assembling a panel centered on antebellum antislavery novelist and poet Mattie Griffith.  Papers for this panel can consider any facet of Griffith’s literary and activist work, or contextualize Griffith within U.S. women’s or Kentucky abolitionist writing.  Current panelists’ papers center on Griffith’s examinations of reading and activism in Griffith’s novel Madge Vertner, and on her abolitionist poetry.
