Imagination and Organizational Lives: Exploring the Liminality of the Human Experience

Dear colleagues,

We invite you to submit paper proposals for a special issue of the Journal of Management, Spirituality and Religion  scheduled to be published in early 2022. The theme of our special issue ("Imagination and organizational lives: Exploring the liminality of the human experience") centres around the imagination as an essential human need and as an essential human capability, and sets the scene for conversations and contributions on how imagination brings to light those ineffable, yet precious, encounters and experiences that shift boundaries and make us grow.

The liminal “in-between” quality of the imagination, we argue, is an under-researched and possibly under-appreciated resource for the development of soulful, dynamic, nurturing and resilient organizations and organizational members.

We encourage researchers and practitioners to share their imaginative explorations of what it means to be human in the context of organizations. We seek to engage with the richness and diversity of imagination to help organizations understand complex realities and transcend what may be perceived as limitations. We especially invite contributions that situate, explore, and/or discuss the following:

  • How imagination is experienced and manifested in organizations and social communities.
  • How imagination contributes to our understanding of ourselves and of our lives as organizational agents and as social change agents.
  • How imagination informs reflections on spiritual aspects of management and leadership.
  • How imaginative stories are expressed and manifested in organizations and/or communities, and what role they play in these contexts.

Proposals (approximately 1,000 words) engaging with a variety of creative formats as methodology are welcomed (e.g. theatre, poetry, creative writing, visual arts, improvisation, musical practices). Submissions can be conceptual or reflecting on practice, or both; we welcome sole-authored or co-authored proposals.

Please consult the full Call for Proposals for further context and ideas by clicking here or visiting

The submission deadline for the initial proposals is January 15th, 2021.

Please submit your proposal (approximate length of 1,000 words) as a pdf document by email to the Special Issue editors Dr. Cécile Rozuel and Dr. Lauren Michelle Levesque. Make sure to include “Special Issue JMSR” in the email subject line. Your proposal should include your name, email contact details and – if applicable – institutional affiliation.

The proposals will be reviewed, and feedback and invitations to submit full manuscripts will be sent to potential authors by February 15th, 2021.

Queries or questions should be directed to the Special Issue editors.

We look forward to receiving your contributions!
