We are thrilled to announce the inaugural Joint Atlantic Seminar for the History of East Asian Science, Technology, and Medicine, to be held on April 16-17, 2021.

JAS-EASTM seeks to inspire a tradition of collegiality across the eastern seaboard, including the Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada. The goal of the seminar is to bring together scholars at various stages of their careers working on an array of topics related to the history of science, technology, and medicine in East Asia. JAS-EASTM will provide a friendly setting for scholars to engage with each others’ work and receive supportive feedback.

Our original inaugural conference was supposed to take place in Baltimore, in Spring 2020, but was canceled due to COVID-19. For the same reason, the Spring 2021 meeting will be held virtually

Interested junior scholars (graduate students and recent PhDs) are invited to submit a presentation proposal that fits one of the following modules:

  • Foods
  • Public Health
  • Infrastructure
  • Systems of Knowledge

Scholars whose papers were accepted to JAS-EASTM 2020, and who are working on topics that fit within the above list, are welcome to reapply.

Individual paper proposals should be submitted through the JAS-EASTM website (https://jaseastm.org) and include an abstract of fewer than 300 words and a short bio. The deadline for submission is December 10th, 2020 (EST). Notifications will be sent out in late January or early February.

Presenters are expected to pre-circulate papers of no longer than 1,000 words, two weeks before the conference. The papers will be posted online and access will be limited to conference attendees alone. The virtual meeting will be dedicated to discussion of the papers and Q&A.

Participation in the seminar is not limited to presenters, and we encourage anybody interested to register and attend. Registration for the seminar will begin in February.
