ARCHIVE ON STAGE. HISTORY ON SCREEN
Online theatrical premiere, movie screening, and panel discussion of Solomon Mikhoels’s life, art, and politics

Solomon Mikhoels (1890-1948), the beloved star of Soviet Yiddish theater, envisioned performance as politics, and the actor as political leader. Thus his singular vision of “acting” anticipated the 21st century’s “performance society” back in the 20th century—the age of mass politics, world wars, and social revolutions.

Mikhoels’s performing legacy was archived and preserved. Today’s spectators are able to experience first-hand both his playwriting experiments and roles, including his 1919 play “Builder” and the movie character Mikhoels played in the 1932 Russian-Yiddish film “Return of Nathan Becker.” Online showing of the play and the movie will be followed by the panel featuring leading experts in Soviet Yiddish culture who will contextualize the video materials and discuss their artistic, cultural, and political import.
