The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) welcomes proposals from scholars and cultural practitioners for the NIAS Conference from 9-11 June 2021 in Amsterdam.
The overarching theme of this interdisciplinary 3-day hybrid conference is Studies of Belonging. The definition of ‘studies of belonging’ will deliberately remain open as this concept can apply to a vast range of social, historical, material, cultural, psychological, juridical, social geographical, and economic phenomena.
The conference will be built around six topical threads, and an explanation of each thread can be found on the webpage listed.
- Place-attachment and Mobility
- Community-life and Isolation
- Practices of Belonging
- Borders and Boundaries
- Seeking Refuge
- Identity, Inequality and Politics
NIAS invites researchers, artists, writers and journalists to present their work on the theme of belonging with the aim to set the agenda for future interdisciplinary and international collaborations on this topic.
NIAS invites scholars (having 3 years of post-doc experience), writers, journalists and artists who deal with issues of belonging in their work, to contribute with a paper or arts presentation. Please, submit your proposal abstract (max. 300 words) to Events@nias.knaw.nl, before 20 October 2020. Please indicate in your proposal which ‘topical thread’ you want to present in.
We also welcome proposals for panel discussions and roundtables around a topical thread. Panel proposals which combine disciplines, gender and scholarly career stages are particularly welcome.
A panel or roundtable abstract should not exceed 300 words, and should also have a chair, a discussant and 4-5 panelists with their abstracts (not exceeding 300 words) and author information.
Decisions on proposals accepted will be sent out by 15 November 2020.
