The Department of History at Lawrence University, a selective liberal arts college and conservatory of music in Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track assistant professorship in twentieth-century U.S. history. The successful applicant will have research and teaching interests in African American or Native American Indigenous history. Preferred sub-fields include politics and/or political economy, law, public policy, labor, education, or immigration. We seek candidates with demonstrated teaching excellence, who can teach core theory and methods courses for history majors, can contribute to Freshman Studies, Lawrence’s signature first-year program, as well as contribute cross-listed courses to Lawrence’s Ethnic Studies program. Interests in public and digital history would also be desirable. Appointment to begin on September 1, 2021. The successful candidate will have earned a Ph.D. by the time of appointment.
Competitive candidates for this appointment will be committed to excellence in teaching and research, and capable of effective mentoring and advising of undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds. Teaching responsibilities include two courses per term, primarily in the Department of History, and regular participation in Freshman Studies during either the fall or winter term.
