The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, which together form the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, seek a full-time Lunder Curator of American Art at an assistant or associate level. This is a five-year term appointment with the option of renewal.
The Freer and Sackler are complementary, co-administered, and sharing a common staff. Committed to preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting exemplary works of art, the museum houses exceptional collections of Asian art, with more than 42,000 objects dating from the Neolithic period to today. Renowned and iconic objects originate from China, Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, the ancient Near East, and the Islamic world.
The Freer collection, which cannot lend objects to other institutions nor borrow, houses the largest and most important collection of works by the 19th-century American artist James McNeil Whistler, including his celebrated Peacock Room. It also holds key works by Tryon, Dewing, and Thayer, as well related archival materials and a Study Collection.Core to the Freer’s original vision, the American collection remains an essential feature of the museum and contributes in critical ways to the mission of the Freer and Sackler to advance public understanding of American and Asian arts.
The position requires a doctorate in American art history; specialization in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century; knowledge of the broad field of American art history; knowledge of nineteenth-century American art and its relationship to Asia and Asian art is desirable; experience in developing original exhibitions, publications, symposia, and workshops to contextualize 19th-century American Art of the Aesthetic Movement within a broader artistic, cultural, and historic framework; the ability to address both a scholarly audience as well as the interested general public.
