Call for Contributions for Glossen (Deadlines: Aug. 15 and Nov. 1, 2020)

„Zwei Seelen wohnen ach, in meiner Brust“:

Call for Contributions for Glossen (Deadlines: Aug. 15 and Nov. 1, 2020)

„Two souls, alas, dwell in my breast”

Transatlantic and intercultural doubled identities

As the quote from Goethe’s Faust indicates, the central topic of this volume of Glossen is the doubling of identity. This theme of German classicism has unfolded and developed in a complex and successive transformation into our contemporary Western Civilization and its multicultural orientation. To name only a few examples of this often evoked clash of civilizations and its attempts at reconciliation: the co-habitation of Christianity and Islam, the German-German process of coming to terms with the past (GDR-FRG), and double identities such as German-Turkish, Afro-German, German-Bohemian, German-Jewish, German-American. Two souls also unfold in contemporary concepts of the psychological, spiritual, and biological, such as bipolarity, bisexuality, etc. All of these phenomena can be represented in creative narratives or discovered and analyzed further in literary and cultural-historical examples.

Please send a short abstract of 100-200 words until August 15, 2020 to flubich@odu.edu and ludwigj@dickinson.edu. The finished articles should be handed in by November 1, 2020.

Glossen also features an ongoing series “Recent Posts,” which focuses on topical and current events, personal experiences, and other forms of intellectual communication. We welcome your suggestions for new posts!
