Transatlantic Crossings: German/American Cultural Influences

CfP: NeMLA 2021 (March 8-14, 2021 in Philadelphia)

When Germans and Americans move back and forth between the continents, they participate in an important cross pollination influencing both the intellectual and artistic worlds of both cultures. Whether they came with the waves of people that journeyed westward in the wake of the German Revolution of 1848, or because of wars and economic needs, or from diaspora across Europe they brought new ideas and artistry to America. During the maturation, commercial expansion and the technological explosion of the new world in the twentieth century, programs fostering education like the Fulbright exchange, sent millions of Americans back to Germany to study, teach, report, work and to live permanently. In the twenty first century, the exchange of ideas and cultures now can be done electronically as well as physically.

This panel invites papers that address aspects of this exchange of ideas in the literary, performing and visual arts that are, to date, underrepresented, possibly including letters reports on intellectual and artistic ‘tours’ of the “new” or “old” world, or overlooked exile or immigrant experiences. The lives and achievements of well-known exiles, visitors, or immigrants, which have been under-discussed, are also welcome, as are papers that focus on artists who lived in both worlds or left one for the other. Contemporary literature or film that crosses these borders is also of interest.
