Title: Comparative Print Capitalism in Times of Transformation

Benedict Anderson contends that print capitalism played a significant role in the rise of the European nation-state. This model becomes more complicated in Asian histories, in terms of the added factors, such as the engagement between nationalism and imperialism, between national identities and histories, and global capitalism. This panel explores the changing moments brought by political, economic, social, religious, or technological transformations in the print culture of different Asian countries (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Pakistan, Japan, Korea, Russia, Tailand, and Vietnam, etc.). Our discussion focuses on how the changing moments of print culture in different Asian countries, in particular when encountering capitalism, gave rise to new modes of literary and cultural production, circulation, and consumption. Through this interdisciplinary and cross-cultural exploration, we aim to find comparable moments in print culture in the histories of different Asian countries.

Individual papers may concern, but are not limited to the following topics:

Women and print culture

Global capitalism and knowledge production

National identity and disidentification

Other modernities

The production, circulation, and consumption of literature and visual arts

All genres of literature, visual arts, and popular cultures

We have currently scholars presenting on China, India, and Korea. We hope to find two more scholars who are specialized in the study of other Asian cultures. If you are interested in this topic, please contact the panel orgnizer, Jingsheng Zhang, ( jz1@email.sc.edu).

We are looking forward to hearing from you.
