NeMLA 2021 Graduate Student Caucus-Sponsored Session

Building off GSC’s successful 2019 session, “Bridging the Praxis Gap,” which largely addressed pedagogical issues, this session aims to address an even wider variety of gaps in what is taught in graduate school and the critical skills needed to survive in academia and professional life beyond. We are particularly interested in ways to bridge traditional notions of graduate school with active leadership training frameworks that seek to develop engaged graduate students who could take the reins and influence positive change in various contexts in and out of academia.

With a lack of consistency across higher education (if graduate students receive instruction at all outside of discipline-centered theory), this Graduate Student Caucus-sponsored session invites proposals that consider those skills and competencies not routinely taught as part of a graduate program. While this session is focused on graduate studies, we eagerly welcome scholars from all demographics, including contingent and independent scholars as well as full-time faculty and graduate students, to address these topics.

Topics might include (but are not limited to):

1. Translating content knowledge and academic skills into leadership opportunities;

2. Developing enriching social relationships within your graduate studies program;

3. Participating in social entrepreneurship, corporate responsibility, and public intellectualism;

4. Getting the most of a academic conferences as a graduate student;

5. Archival work (while a graduate student and after graduation);

6. Retooling academic networks for leadership success;

7. Research/writing style skills;

8. Manuscript preparation;
