Visiting Assistant Professor of US/North American History

University of Wisconsin-Madison, History

The Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) of US/North American history with expected start date of August 17, 2020. The appointment is expected to be for a fixed term of two years, with a teaching responsibility of 2 undergraduate courses (one large introductory lecture and one research seminar) per semester. Specific courses will be determined according to the needs of the department.

The successful candidate will have a research and teaching background in US/North American history, and be prepared to teach introductory surveys (pre- and post-Civil War). We encourage candidates to propose engaging undergraduate lecture courses based on their teaching interests as well as undergraduate research seminars in which undergraduates can use resources available at the Wisconsin Historical Society and other local institutions.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in US/North American History conferred by August 17, 2020
  • Experience as the lead instructor in at least one course with a minimum of 50 students
  • Experience supervising teaching assistants (preferred)
  • Active research agenda

The VAP will be welcome to engage in the History Department’s vibrant intellectual community and that of the university at large. There will be no additional service requirements. The VAP will not be expected to teach in the summer.
