SAVE THE HERITAGE 2020: DAVID GAREJI MONASTERIES - applications in by March 8th, 2020

David Gareji Monasteries and Hermitage are one of the most important cultural and religious heritage landmarks in Georgia. The site is comprised of 22 rock-hewn monasteries and more than 5.000 sanctuaries and cave-cells located in Eastern Georgia and in neighbouring Azerbaijan. The monastery complex was submitted to the UNESCO Tentative List in 2007 and is registered as a Monument of National Importance.

Today, the whole complex is facing several threats – from rock disintegration, and intense erosion of the sandstone, to structural damage. The spread of tourism on the one side and the lack of infrastructure, maintained pathways and signs on the other, are calling for sustainable development of the site.
