The Autry Public History Prize
The Autry Public History Prize is awarded annually to media exhibits, public programs, or written works that contribute to a broader public reflection and appreciation of the past or serve as a model of professional public history practice in the history of the North American West. The award consists of a $1,000 prize and a certificate to the award recipient. The prize is made possible by the generous support of the Autry Museum of the American West.
The Caughey Western History Prize
The WHA announces the Caughey Book Prize given annually for the most distinguished book on the history of the American West, broadly defined. This prize is made possible by the generous support of the John and LaRee Caughey Foundation.
David J. Weber-Clements Center Prize
The WHA announces the David J. Weber-Clements Center Prize given annually for the best non-fiction book on Southwestern America. The competition will be open to any non-fiction book, including biography, on any aspect of Southwestern life, past or present with a 2019 copyright. The purpose of the prize is to promote fine writing and original research on the American Southwest. The author will receive $2500 and an invitation to give the annual Weber-Clements Prize Lecture at Southern Methodist University.
Donald L. Fixico Award
In 2018 the Western History Association will present the first Donald Fixico Award. The Donald Fixico Book Award ($1000) recognizes innovative work in the field of American Indian and Canadian First Nations History that centers Indigenous epistemologies and perspectives. The award honors Dr. Fixico's prolific scholarly legacy and celebrates the vibrant future of the field. Books that address Indigenous history in the United States and Canada are eligible for the award.
Dwight L. Smith (ABC-CLIO) Award
The Western History Association announces competition for the annual Dwight L. Smith (ABC-CLIO) Award. This award for $500 ($300 to the author/editor and $200 to the publisher) will be given to an author/editor and the publisher of a significant bibliography or research tool - either a book or other bibliographic/research tool publication, electronic or otherwise - on any aspect of the history of the American West.
Hal K. Rothman Book Prize
The Western History Association announces the Hal K. Rothman Book Prize given annually for the best book in western environmental history defined in its broadest sense. The award consists of $500 and a certificate to the author, and a certificate to the press. The award is supported by contributions from individuals and publishers, and administered by the WHA. Publishers may submit more than one title from their list. In 2017 the prize changed from a biennial award to an annual award.
Joan Paterson Kerr Award
The Western History Association announces a prize of $500 for the Joan Paterson Kerr Book Award. This award is presented annually for the best illustrated book on the history of the American West. There is a $500 prize awarded to the author/editor and a certificate goes to the press.
John C. Ewers Award
The Western History Association announces the John C. Ewers Book Award given annually for the best published book on the North American (including Mexico) Indian Ethnohistory. The award is $500 to the author and a certificate to the publisher. The award is supported by the Ewers family and administered by the Western History Association.
Robert G. Athearn Prize
The Western History Association announces the Athearn Book Award given annually for a published book on the twentieth-century American West. The award is $500. This award is supported by the friends and students of Professor Athearn and administered by the Western History Association.
Robert M. Utley Prize
The Western History Association announces the Robert M. Utley Book Prize to be given annually for the best book published on the military history of the frontier and western North America (including Mexico and Canada) from prehistory through the twentieth century. The award grants $500 to the author and a certificate to the publisher. The prize is supported by contributions from publishers and individuals, and administered by the Western History Association. Books published in the previous calendar year are eligible for submission.
Sally and Ken Owens Award
The Western History Association announces the Owens Book Award given annually for the best book on the history of the Pacific West, including Alaska, Hawaii, Western Canada, and the U.S. Pacific territories. The Award is $500 to the author and a certificate to the publisher. The award is supported by the Sally and Ken Owens Trust and administered by the Western History Association.
W. Turrentine Jackson Book Prize
The Western History Association announces the competition for the W. Turrentine Jackson Award. The award will be presented to a beginning professional historian for a first book on any aspect of the history of the American West. Presses may submit more than one book. The winner of the $1,000 award will be announced during the Western History Association's annual conference.
