Paradoxes of Progress – Global Permeabilities and Transformations of Avant-Garde Thinking and Practice
Avant-Gardes are presumed to be movements which aim at a complete transformation of the artistic, economic and political sphere. In all its manifestations, they propagate a mostly radical departure from the past and its norms. Their special focus lies on the notion of progress and on a renegotiation of what constitutes and represents an emancipated as well as timely art and society. But whose voices initiate and lead this idea of progress? Who should be addressed by this mission? And in what way can these future scenarios, oftentimes conceived in elitist circles, be made tangible, transparent, and understandable?
The symposium »Paradoxes of Progress,« which has been initiated by a group of young scholars, raises the question to what extent the claim for a progressive transformation of society through art is still defining us today and how global art relates to this demand. Based on scientific analyses of the historical global avant-gardes, a bridge will be built towards contemporary transdisciplinary artistic practices. By using the notion of permeability as a critical means, paradoxes inherent to the concept of progress will be scrutinized: How open are institutions and manifestations of progressive thinking? How can borders, like those between art and life, be mediated in a new way? What kind of media are employed and which groups have access to them? Can separations between social categories such as class, ethnic groups, and gender be reflected or even dissolved?
