The panel welcomes historical research papers dealing with “abstinence” and “amusement” in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey from the 19th century to the present. Actors with various ideological, political, and religious orientations have used these concepts to not only articulate their understanding of “good” and “bad” behaviors but also construct collective identities. The panel will discuss different aspects of these concepts, including cultural, political, and economic aspects, together with the global circulation of ideas and norms. All papers discussing one or more of these aspects are welcomed.
