Local History and Historic Preservation Conference

Imo State University, Owerri

July 17-18, 2020


The Center for Igbo Studies, Imo State University in collaboration with the Transatlantic Research Group invites scholars and practitioners to an Interdisciplinary Conference on Local History and Historic Preservation. In this conference, we are interested in exploring local history and historic preservation as they related to local communities and the events that have shaped them and their identities. We are particularly interested in papers that focus on life and events at the local levels, historical monuments, artifacts and personalities, rural social movements broadly conceived. Papers from undergraduate and graduate students are welcome.


There will be a half day workshop devoted to research methods targeting undergraduate and graduate students.


We welcome abstracts from academic and non-academic practitioners on the following themes, among others


Archaeological collections care 

Arts and Spirituality

Arts as History

Culture in Film

Development of Chieftaincy institutions

Environment, economy, and Livelihood

Indigenous architecture

Initiations Ceremonies

Local Crafting and Guild Traditions

Local literary cultures

Museums and Monuments

Music as History

Myths, Folklores and Local identity

Nollywood and Cultural Representations

Oral traditions

Public History

Religious Encounters at the local levels

Rural Industries 

Street Names as History

Traditions of Origin and Settlement patterns

Women and Rural social Movements 


Interested participants should send a 200-word abstract that includes full name, institutional affiliation and email address to localhistconference@gmail.com no later than March 30, 2020


Registration Fee: Local (N10,000); International ($100); Graduate students (N5000); undergraduate students (N2000). The registration fee covers conference materials and some meals. Accepted participants must pre-register by paying a registration fee to be included in the program.
