Call for Papers: International Conference on Middle Eastern Studies: Conflicts and Struggles of the Contemporary Period

Altınbaş University, May 14-15, 2020, Istanbul

Deadline extended to January 27, 2020!

The Middle East has faced many immediate challenges, which have to be considered at the same time as outcomes of longer-term pressures throughout the region. The immediate sources of instability and insecurity are obvious, such as deepening authoritarian rule, the Arab uprisings and their implications for societies, the rise and decline of the Islamic State (IS), ongoing sectarian conflicts, the emergence of new local actors, heightened tensions between Israel and Palestine, the Kurdish Question, Turkey’s military operations in northern Syria, the struggle between Israel and Iran, and the Yemen war and its implications for Iran-Saudi Arabia relations.

All these developments and events have created new spaces for conflict and struggle by causing new insecurities and instabilities. They have also deepened ongoing problems by adding them new dimensions. In this context, the role of global actors pursuing their own interests and seeking new spheres of influence in the region and, the intervention of regional and global actors in the various grievances and struggles of local groups, people and communities appear to be important factors needing analysis. The positions of the European Union and the United Nations towards these Middle Eastern issues remain also problematic.

Based on this perspective, papers exploring the following themes and issues are welcomed:

– Security

– Cooperation

– Ethnic and religious conflicts/ struggles

– Migration

– Refugees

– Violence

– Islamist movements and organizations

– Impact of new technologies on conflicts and struggles

– Political and social movements

– Foreign policies towards the Middle East and North Africa
