Interplay: A Journal of Languages, Linguistics, and Literature

Call for Papers for Vol 6. No 1 (2020)

Across the disciplines:

Integrative approaches to the teaching of languages, linguistics, and literature

Interplay: A Journal of Languages, Linguistics, and Literature (ISSN 2617-0574), is a double-blind peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, Tunghai University, Taichung, Taiwan, R.O.C.

We publish original scholarship in the fields of languages, linguistics, and literature, as well as articles treating the influences and interactions that have historically obtained and continue to exert cultural influence between several language arts disciplines. These include studies in the English, French, German and Spanish languages, as well as linguistics, considered as foundational to all language study, and literature, which engages with both languages and linguistics by way of critical and interpretative methodologies, aesthetics and poetics. The journal aims to achieve a broad theoretical perspective regarding the conceptual and material relationships operating between these interactive disciplines, the better to elucidate their correspondence, dialog, debates and mutually informative concerns.

For Vol 6. No 1 (2020), we would like to open the floor to a discussion about the practical benefits and hurdles involved in the integration of the fields that represent the scope of Interplay.

Specifically, we are interested in original research that examines the roles of each of the three disciplines in the teaching and learning of the other(s). In particular, we welcome studies and discussions on classroom observations with non-native speakers.

Possible research questions might include:

  • What role can literature and linguistics play in the teaching of a foreign language?
  • What is the role of language(s) and linguistics in the teaching of literature?
  • How can linguistics assist in the teaching of languages and literature?
  • How does the teaching of linguistics facilitate the teaching and learning of languages?
  • How can literature further the understanding of a foreign language?
  • What is the role of language(s) in the teaching of literature?
  • What do the different literary genres have to offer for the teaching of languages and linguistics?
  • How does the linguistic background of students influence the teaching of literature?
  • Which literary forms are best suited for the teaching of foreign languages at different levels?
  • How can vocabulary, grammar, and cultural background knowledge benefit from the study of literature?
